Do I need a controller to play on Android?

To play on your Android device, you don't need a controller. You can use the on-screen overlay with the same functionality as a regular controller.

However, please keep in mind that some games were designed to be played with a regular controller. As such, select titles may be experienced better using a physical controller instead. Depending on the controller, you can connect it either via Bluetooth or a cable.
